Mike Tyson and Cyber Security – You Got a Plan??
Mike Tyson is likely not the first person you might think of when considering your approach to the possibility of a cyberattack. A world-famous and very successful pugilist of the highest order, “Iron Mike” was a fearless opponent in the boxing ring. If you had the nerve to get into the arena with him, you knew things could go badly. Mike famously said “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face…”
The punch…
Absolutely right. When it happens, the reaction to such a jarring hit is severe. The analogy I am making to cyber security and a breach requiring a developed and tested Incident Response Plan (IRP) is just the same. We all have a plan to fend off cybercriminals outside the ring. We set up defenses, trained and tested our end users, and have a robust backup solution in place. Please always remember, we are standing in the ring with these bullies at this very moment. and they are taking some serious swings at you. If you get hit, you get hit hard and it is a shock to the physical, emotional; and corporate senses all at once. And if/when that happens – the incident response plans you thought were solid can rapidly go out of the window.
Many do not have ALL the tools in place. Some protections for sure, but not the end-to-end process…
The solution…
Simply put, an IRP is a documented strategy for identifying and responding to potential cybersecurity incidents. Here’s a brief overview:
- Purpose: To prepare for, detect, respond to, and recover from cyberattacks and data breaches.
- Components:
- Roles and Responsibilities: Assigns specific tasks to team members during an incident.
- Business Continuity Plan: Ensures that the organization can continue operating during and after an incident.
- Tools and Resources: Lists the necessary technology and physical resources.
- Communication Plan: Outlines how to communicate internally and externally during an incident.
- Recovery Processes: Details steps to restore normal operations and secure systems post-incident.
Training, testing, resilience and a fully mapped out response management process are the tools heavy weight fighters like Tyson employed in his heyday. It made him unbeatable, and it will do the same for you.
