Cloud adoption levels soaring

Cloud computing is no longer just a hyped technology, but one that is delivering results to businesses worldwide. Although some IT professionals and companies believed the solution was simply a flash in the pan, industry research continues to prove them wrong time after time. A new North Bridge Venture Partners and GigaOM survey of 1,358 respondents discovered adoption of cloud services has increased at a rapid rate in recent years.

"With four years of data, we're now really beginning to see some interesting trends, such as the five-fold increase in SaaS adoption to 74 percent and the nearly six-fold increase in PaaS adoption to 41 percent," said Michael Skok, founder of the study and general partner at North Bridge.

The survey also found that nearly half of organizations are relying on cloud suites to generate revenue and create new products. Another 45 percent of participants said they already host operations in cloud environments or are planning to do so in the near future.

So why are so many companies embracing cloud computing at such a high level? Flexibility is one of the main benefits of the technology, allowing firms to offload mundane tasks to third-party vendors to refocus their efforts on more internal goals, explained David Card, vice president of GigaOM.

Businesses realize data must be set free
Accessibility is another key trait of cloud computing, allowing employees to complete work-related tasks through their mobile devices anywhere at any time. The study found more companies are realizing the importance of supporting an agile workforce, discovering that two-thirds of participants believe their data will be hosted in the cloud in some capacity in the next two years to further collaboration and consolidation efforts.

Microsoft Office 365 is one cloud-based solution that delivers data accessibility wherever staff members are located. The suite includes the tools so many organizations are used to - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as others such as Outlook, SharePoint, Lync and Exchange. Staff members no matter if they are at home, in the office or in the field can communicate with coworkers and, importantly, customers without limitations.
