Microsoft Power Platform and its three important changes
What is the Power Platform?
The Microsoft Power Platform is a suite of several business applications designed to provide companies with scalable ways to “analyze data, build solutions, automate processes, and create virtual agents.” In essence, it brings together the very best of what Microsoft has to offer in these areas. Whether you use Power BI (analyze data), Power Apps (build solutions), Power Automate (automate processes), or Power Virtual Agents (virtual agent bots), or a combination thereof, you are guaranteed to have some of the most powerful resources at your disposal for all your business-critical needs.
Three important changes:
- GUI. Power Apps, part of the Power Platform suite, is a complete overhaul of the way Dynamics 365 is configured from a visual perspective. The enhanced GUI provides configuration teams with numerous benefits, including instant visual feedback when editing forms, beautiful visual connectors when working with Power Automate, and an overall easier and visually pleasing way to navigate a solution and its components.
- Simplified navigation. Working in Power Platform when customizing a system is navigationally pleasing. Many of the common areas used have been added into a navigation pane for quick access, while some of the more complex navigation trees have been simplified or removed altogether.
- Chatbots. This incredible tool has been brought to the forefront of the Power Platform, allowing customizers to leverage a bot’s powerful capabilities through Power Virtual Agents. Building and deploying them is much easier than in Classic, from both a visual and a navigational perspective. Though sometimes overlooked, they are an invaluable addition any client’s CRM needs.
What about the Classic customization settings?
For all the functionality that Power Platform brings to the table, there are still many configuration options that are only available in the Classic approach, though this will soon be coming to an end. Microsoft plans on integrating all aspects of Classic into Power Platform as quickly as possible, so it’s best to become familiar with the layout of Power Platform sooner rather than later.
For those of us who may be used to the Classic Dynamics 365 system, a change in the fundamental way we go about our configurations can incur a slight learning curve. This is very evident with the Power Platform, bringing not just a visual adjustment to the way we interact with Dynamics 365, but a functional adjustment as well. Though change always takes some getting used to, Power Apps – through Power Platform – is the new standard for the way Dynamics 365 is configured.
