October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Your business needs protection from cyberthreats all year, but going into the holiday time with extra shopping and other distractions, a cyberattack may be easier to carry out. The CISA offers a lot of great information on cybersecurity awareness month and protection methods everyone should be aware of.
Here are some pro tips for protecting your digital assets and critical business data:
1. Deploy layered protection – cover all the ways data could be accessed – business network, website, email, cloud applications, in office and remote workers’ devices, IoT devices, computer-managed machinery. Understand all possible attack surfaces in use by your organization – and cover all your assets.
2. Follow alerts on https://www.cisa.gov/ – periodically check for new exploits that could affect technology used by your employees. Don’t wait for the news media to report on threats – find out and remediate, before they can affect your business.
3. Arrange for ongoing employee training for how to spot fake emails, fake websites etc. – cyber security training is key to help prevent attacks via social engineering – a friendly email with a link to an unpaid invoice, or notice of an un-deliverable package etc. via text, phone, email, social media – employees need to be wary of every communication, even if it appears to be from the owner or CEO of the company.
4. Explore options for cyber insurance – get your company familiar and compliant with the requirements to purchase this coverage to help with costs of recovery from a cyber attack. If you think you don’t need cyber insurance, be sure to create a financial strategy for handling the potential costs of data recovery and lost revenue, as well as a plan for a marketing strategy to restore your company’s business reputation if a cyber attack becomes public knowledge.
5. Have a recovery plan for when, not if, a cyberattack happens – decide how incidents should be reported and to whom, what action will be taken to minimize damage, and then the process for recovery of lost/damaged data. Everyone in the company needs to be aware that the plan exists and who will carry it out if necessary.
6. Align with trusted professionals before a cyberattack happens, to find out if your plans have unforeseen gaps in protection.
