Microsoft Outlook 2010 Only Starts in Safe Mode

Microsoft Outlook 2010 Only Starts in Safe Mode

Microsoft recently rolled out an update (KB3114409) for Outlook 2010 which now causes Outlook to start in safe mode. You may have tried disabling Add-ins or recreating the mail profile only to find Outlook starting in safe mode every time.

The update that caused this issue was released on December 8th but was pulled from deployment as of December 9th and will not be re-installed at this time. Though this patch is no longer available, it will not automatically uninstall from the affected machines.

The best resolution for this issue it to uninstall the patch. To uninstall, follow the steps below depending on the version of Windows you have. Some systems require a reboot after you have un-installed the patch, but there are some others that do not. It’s a good idea to reboot either way after the patch has been uninstalled.

Windows 10

  • Go to Start, enter View Installed Updates in the Search Windows box, and then press Enter.
  • In the list of updates, locate and then select update KB3114409, and then select Uninstall.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then select Search. If you’re using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then select Search.
  • Enter windows update, select Windows Update, and then select Installed Updates.
  • In the list of updates, locate and then select update KB3114409, and then select Uninstall.

Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP

  • Go to Start, enter Run, and then select Run.
  • Enter Appwiz.cpl, and then select OK.
  • Use one of the following procedures, depending on the operating system that you’re running.
    *Windows 7 and Windows Vista

    • Select View installed updates.
    • In the list of updates, locate and select update KB3114409, and then select Uninstall.
      *Windows XP

      • Select the Show updates check box.
      • In the list of updates, locate and select update KB3114409, and then select Remove.

Here is a manual fix to be applied to the registry directly or for use in group policy. This will disable the ability to run Outlook in safe mode all together. Use this option as a last resort and plan to remove it after this patch is fixed and re-released. Safe mode can be a valuable troubleshooting tool for finding issues in Outlook.
