Slow Mobile Internet: 5 Common Causes

Slow Mobile Internet: 5 Common Causes

Internet slowness can be very frustrating at times, especially if it is only in certain parts of your home. Luckily, this can be fixed in a fairly simple way. In this blog, we will discuss five common causes of slow internet on smart phones and how to fix them.

Router location

One simple yet overlooked reason why your phone may be experiencing internet lag is because of your Wi-Fi router’s location. Wi-Fi has a range of 230 feet, however the farther you go, the weaker the signal. Along with the range, large objects between your phone and the router can heavily impact the signal.

Routers are best kept in a centralized location, away from any concrete or masonry objects. This includes fireplaces, walls, or any other large objects. The router emits a signal from all sides; however, one large object can heavily impact the connectivity.

Wi-Fi noise

The most common frequency for electrical appliances is 2.4GHz, which can also impact the routers signal. The best way to avoid this is to place your router in an open area with little electronics around.

Changing the frequency of your router is also a good way to avoid disruption. In order to do this, you must go to your router's settings page. This can be found by typing in your private IP address in the search bar. This can be done through any web browser and is available to anyone. After logging in, go to the tab that says, "wireless settings" or "channel." From there, you will be able to switch to a higher frequency and save.

An important part of changing the frequency is ensuring your phone can allow this frequency. The easiest way to find this out is to call your service provider and simply ask them if the phone allows 5GHz frequency.

Fluctuating network speed

Another reason for your phone’s slow internet connection could be fluctuating network speeds. To check whether this is the cause of slow internet speeds, ask these questions:

  • How many devices are connected to the router?
  • What are these devices using the internet for?

Increasing the router's bandwidth speed can allow more devices and streaming without disruption. Doing so will also allow more downloads and gaming to be going on at the same time.

Poor VPN connection

Using a virtual private network (VPN) is a great way to improve your security and privacy when browsing the internet. But if your VPN connection is slow, it can also impact the speed of your internet connection. To fix this, try connecting to a different VPN server or switching to a different VPN protocol.

You can also try disabling your VPN. This will make your browsing experience faster, but it will also make it less secure. So only do this if you are connected to a safe network, such as your home or office Wi-Fi. Using a VPN on a public network is always recommended.

Full browser cache

Your browsing cache saves searches and results for later use, allowing them to be loaded quickly next time. This is a curse and a blessing, as it also slows down searches not included in the cache.

You can clear your cache manually or use a cache cleaner app to get rid of useless data and optimize your phone’s internet speed. If you decide to download a cache cleaner app, make sure that it is trustworthy, so you don’t accidentally download a malware-infected program.
