ViperSoftX Malware Targets Password Managers

What is an External Penetration Test?

A penetration test, also known as a pentest, is a security assessment that simulates the activities of real-world attackers to identify security holes in your IT systems or applications. The goal of this test is to understand what vulnerabilities you have, how they can be exploited, and what the impact would be if the attacker was successful. More specifically, an external pentest is initiated from outside your network, and pointed at your external public IP address. Not to be confused with an internal pentest which is initiated inside your network, and shows vulnerabilities of internal systems.

External penetration tests look to compromise external facing systems like web servers, ftp servers, camera systems, etc. Some more in-depth tests can gauge the extent of the vulnerability, tell you how successful the attack would be, and how much damage would be done.

It is also recommended to do regular vulnerability scans on your external network to alert on any new or existing vulnerabilities. These scans are usually done by software updated with the latest vulnerabilities database. They aren’t as customized as a penetration tests but can be a great tool to alert of vulnerabilities so they can be patched before they are exploited and systems are compromised.
